My CoT story...

In December of 2008 I discovered a small video on YouTube for "Oscar Wilde" by Company of Thieves. I was immediately drawn in. The lush melodies of Marc Walloch's intricate guitar work combined with the powerful vocals of Genevieve Schatz created an undeniable musical landscape full of passion and honesty. At that time, their independent debut album Ordinary Riches was unavailable, but would soon be re-released on iTunes. I also discovered that they previously released an acoustic EP that was no longer in circulation. My mission was clear and I was intent on doing whatever it took to get my hands on this music. Armed only with a single .mp3 of Oscar Wilde, a friend and I jumped into my car and drove two hours in the dead of winter to see Company of Thieves perform. Their live performance was amazing, and I walked away with the original independent release version of Ordinary Riches in my hands! I was hooked. Now I had track down this acoustic EP that I had only read about online.

I had the fortunate opportunity to see Company of Thieves live for a second time a few weeks later. After their performance the band members took some time to talk to the fans in the audience, and I questioned them on the whereabouts of this mysterious acoustic EP. Much to my surprise, guitarist Marc Walloch offered to make a copy of the CD, and asked me to send him my mailing address. Now, they just recently embarked on a nationwide tour for Ordinary Riches, but true to his word Marc took the time to make a copy, found a FedEx while on the road, and delivered it. I received a package in the mail with the Tourniquet Acoustic EP safely sealed inside just a few days later. The padded envelope read "Love, Peace, and Music - CoT."

Company of Thieves' debut album Ordinary Riches is a complete work with an infectiousness that has kept it on infinite repeat since the day I discovered it. All of the band members are such genuine and beautiful individuals that its no wonder that their music touches people in the way that it does.

Now in 2011, their second studio release Death of Communication shows the evolution of their music after a rigorous two years on the road. I had the good fortune to catch CoT live a couple of times in support of the new album, and they still continue to amaze! Unfortunately, a packed schedule and other obligations have limited my ability to update the Dangerous Indeed blog pages, as well as my YouTube and Vimeo pages dedicated to CoT.

The world has yet to see what Company of Thieves will become, and I will be watching and supporting them every step of the way!

Company of Thieves Announce New Album, On Tour With The Whigs

Chicago-based band Company Of Thieves have announced that their new album, Running From A Gamble, will drop on May 17th. To celebrate the new disc, the band has also released a free MP3 of the album track "Modern Waste."

A follow up to 2009's Ordinary Riches, Running From A Gamble was spearheaded by singer Genevieve Schatz and guitarist Marc Walloh, who wrote much of the new material. “The album is a coming of age adventure about the mysterious, passionate and painful transition from dependence and enchantment to autonomy and awareness,”Genevieve says. The album's first single, "Death of Communication," will be released to radio later this month.

Company of Thieves are currently on tour with The Whigs, and are set to play a gig with Hall and Oats at Highland Park for Illinois' Ravinia Festival on June 26th. Listen to and download "Modern Waste" and look at the list of tour dates below

Chicago’s Company of Thieves part of New Noise at Nine

Company of Thieves is about to put out their second full album, Running From a Gamble. We’ll have the first song released from that collection tonight on New Noise at Nine, a program that features the best new records that we’re playing today on New Music Thursday. This local alt/indie band had good success with their first album, Ordinary Riches, which came out two years ago and included the song, “Oscar Wilde.” We’re looking for this band to build on the success of their first outing. Read further for more “New Noise.”

Company of Thieves’ new song, “Death of Communication,” is now available to download from the usual sources and a video is now ready to go as well. Last time out they found themselves on Last Call With Carson Daley and with a slot on last year’s Lollapalooza schedule. This summer they’ll be appearing at Ravinia on June 26.

Other new music we’ll be hearing tonight are songs from J. Marcis, former lead singer for Dinosaur Jr., a band from the Ozarks called Ha Ha Tonka, plus solo Eddie Vedder, Ben Harper, Paul Simon, Death Cab for Cutie and, of course, more.

5 Questions with Company of Thieves

Today's 5 Questions Q&A comes from the incredibly talented Genevieve Schatz from Company of Thieves. Hailing from Chicago, IL, this vegetarian vocalist really knows her stuff. Check her out!

Q: What prompted you to become vegetarian? Were there any bands, books, etc. that influenced your decision?
A: I was prompted to become a vegetarian when I attended a punk show in my home town at the age of 15 because there were a bunch of kids in front of the venue handing out pamphlets filled with shocking imagery and information on the cruel treatment of farm animals in our country. The flyers served as a gateway for me to continue with my own research and take personal action.

Q: What are some of your favorite vegetarian and/or vegan foods?
A: Some of my favorite vegetarian/vegan foods include black bean or portobello mushroom burgers, BBQ seitan, silken tofu with sweet potatoes, and any kind of tofu scramble for breakfast!

Q: Are you familiar with peta2's McCruelty campaign? Do you think boycotting companies like McDonalds and KFC is an easy way for everyone to help animals?

A: I am familiar with the campaign and feel that boycotting companies as an individual is the first step to making a difference. Animals will be helped when we can educate ourselves and choose to partner with and become customers of companies we know are not mistreating them. A revolution will happen with one person at a time, for that person and by that person through individual research.

Q: Of all of the major animal rights issues (animal testing, factory farming, animals used in entertainment, dog fighting, etc.) are there any issues that are particularly close to your heart?
A: Being on tour has allowed me to see unhealthy farmland conditions first hand. The general mistreatment of animals as pets has always struck a chord within me because of the families/people I have witnessed abusing their pets throughout my life; the kind of abuse that goes beyond species and serves as a glimpse into the umbrella of the crucial problems of humanity: inequality, apathy, hatred. There are certain haunting images that will be forever burned into my brain.

Q; What does Company of Thieves have coming up that we can look forward to?
A: Company of Thieves will be releasing a new album in the spring, called Running From A Gamble. We can't wait to share it with everyone!

Today I found out that Mike Ortiz has left Company of Thieves which is the worst news I’ve heard all year. It’s not on bad terms, he just doesn’t feel that the music industry lifestyle is for him. So, more power to him for getting a hold of and taking charge of his life, but what if I never see Mike Ortiz again. He is one of my most favorite people, and definitely the best storyteller I have ever met.

I already get a tinge of sadness every time I think about the fact that I haven’t seen Company of Thieves in such a long time. I miss them! I think the last time was October of ‘09!! Ugh!! We were really good friends for awhile there… going to parties together, having sleepovers, eating delicious meals together, and real talkin’ anytime we were in the same city. I have seriously so many memories of them and I don’t have their phone numbers anymore and I can’t even bear the thought that I may never see Mike again because I just moved about a thousand more miles away from Chicago.

I’ll end this slightly sappy post (I act like the entire band has died) with my favorite quote that anyone has ever said yet just so happens to be by Mike (in regards to a giant hide and seek game in Chicago) in the most serious tone and with the widest eyes:

Dear family, friends, and fans

The last month has been quite difficult for the band. We sincerely regret to inform you that our best friend, drummer, and one of the founding members of COT has decided to leave the band and the music business all together.

In 2006, Genevieve and I were two kids with ambition that we’ve always compared to a non-stop train. We had (have) so much passion and so many goals right from the get-go and it’s very hard to find a collective group of young peers that share that ambition and those goals and our quick -pace lifestyle. Because of that, among many other reasons, we have gone through many line-up changes since the beginning when all we ever wanted was a tight family band. We have always cared so much about the music we make and the wonderful people we get to share it with, that none of these setbacks have ever slowed down or stopped the band. But to me, having Mike Ortiz around the past 4 years was very much like a family. We will always remember so many great memories with Mike and know he will always be with COT in spirit. He is very much apart of the heart of Company of Thieves. If you know Mike, you know he has the most wonderful, upbeat personality and can shoot the shit about anything, with anyone for hours.

Since we are young, sometimes some people realize that this lifestyle isn’t for them. We respect and support Mike’s decision to part ways and pursue other interests. We are all still best friends so if you see Mikey at a show, give him a big hug. Mike Ortiz is truly one of a kind and we just want him to be happy.

We will soon post many updates of what we have been up to regarding moving forward, as well as album news, etc…

This is my interview with Genevieve Schatz, singer of Company of Thieves, at the band’s October 13th show in Cleveland, OH in support of Ok Go.

How has this tour been so far?
It’s been awesome. When we found out we got picked for it, we were jumping up and down because we’ve been fans of them for awhile. So to be able to play music to their crowd, who seem to be genuine music lovers, every night we feel very welcome on stage.

Where did this band begin?
We began in Chicago. Basically, Marc, the guitarist, and I have a mutual friend named Bob, who is actually upstairs; he is on tour with us. But they were going to school together and we got introduced at a train station in Chicago. We took the same train and we became really great friends and decided to start hanging out and playing music together. We started in the open mic-scene at local coffee shops in Chicago and then we met our other band mates down the road from other bands.

How did you get the name of Company of Thieves?
Company of Thieves is part of an expression, “in the company of great thieves.” It kind of means, people that have solidarity amongst each other but who are not necessarily into the way that our society operates so we kind of have solidarity and feel threatened by our society as a whole.

When you are on tour, what do you do to stay busy?
I don’t have to try to stay busy (laughs). There are tons, during the day a lot of times we are in the van for several hours getting from one city to the next and I’ll be dealing with phone calls, e-mails, responding to fans, and eating every once in a while. It’s about finding down time that is the really hard part.

Do you have any advice for aspiring musicians?
I think it is really important to play music for you and to be honest about it. Take every opportunity you can to share it with other people. Even if it is a show that you don’t think will go over well or if it’s in somebody’s basement, those are the night’s that will often surprise you and will be magical.

If you were giving yourself advice 5 years ago, what would you say?
I would say don’t worry so much about everything and just be yourself and people will take it or leave it.

How do you go about writing your songs?
Each one is its own special thing. Sometimes Marc will come up to me and he’ll be playing something on the guitar and I’ll sing a melody over it or he will have a melody already and I’ll put words to it. Sometimes I’ll play around on the piano and bring that to the band to make it into a full song. Other times we will all be jamming and come up with a song as a group.

If you could co-write an album with anyone, who would it be and why?
Maybe…David Bowie or someone like that just because he is someone that seems extremely open minded to always be progressing and evolving. He’s just got so much guts and it would be fun.

What bands have influenced you most?
The Beatles, Radiohead, The Kinks, Wilco, and The Zombies.

What’s the craziest experience you have had with a fan?
Someone attacked me once at a show and started licking my neck. It was terrifying, that was a really crazy moment; that actually also happened in Ohio, Columbus, at a festival.

Do you have a favorite song or place to perform live?
I do not have a favorite song. Favorite place would be…honestly, it would be just in front of anyone, as long as someone was there.

Who is your favorite band that you’ve toured with?
So far, I think Ok Go.

Is there a song that you do not perform live that you wish you did?
I think it would be really fun to play “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” by U2, though I don’t see myself ever actually being able to pull that off.

What’s your greatest memory as a band so far?
I think just being able to travel all over the country and a couple of other countries. I’ve realized that good, honest, pure people are everywhere and they just want to connect. Just being able to meet all of them and hear their stories is incredible.

What are your plans for the future?
I try not to think about it too much, just to stay strong and keep it real.

"We’re going through it now again and starting to see it with this other band we work with called Company of Thieves, who are on Windup Records. Their singer Genevieve is one of the best front people I have ever witnessed in my life. When I started working with them over a year ago they had no virtually zero live following at their shows. They had a record they recorded on their own for five or ten grand in a small studio in Chicago that they put out locally. Windup found them, bought the record and released it nationally. That record has sold close to 50,000 records now. In the time I’ve known them, that band has gone from not really being worth many tickets (even in Chicago which is their home base) to selling out venues like the Bowery Ballroom and are now worth 500-800 people in 20 cities. Like Gaslight, the band is like a deeply moving experience live. You have to really be that great, or you can’t cut through the other acts. There is too much to choose from today, you really must be supernaturally exceptional.

I think it’s really difficult. As an artist you have to have it all, but you have to be really incredible live or you’re not going to get anywhere. We just got Company of Thieves a couple good support slots with The Hold Steady and Ok Go for their next tours to set up their next record coming out early next year 2011. They are currently out supporting the Hold Steady for a month and are doing great- but they’re doing great because they are winning new fans every night. That doesn’t happen to most bands. It is all too common that you can get new artists good support slots and nothing much happens. If the band can’t deliver and really impress people live then getting a good tour doesn’t mean that much."

Company of Thieves is a Chicago-based indie group fronted by talented songwriter and vocalist Genevieve Schatz. The group melts together the strongest elements of classic rock, avant-garde experimentalism, and Chicago blues into one beautiful, musical mess. Schatz brought a sense of audience engagement and vigor similar to Finn from the Hold Steady, rendering the two bands unexpectedly compatible.

Schatz’s sultry voice and vibrant stage presence was reinforced by the superb musicianship of the band as a whole. Chris Faller’s active bass parts were particularly prominent. The group’s musical talent was enhanced by a batch of adventurous, yet infinitely accessible songs. “Oscar Wilde” and “Pressure”, both from 2009’s Ordinary Riches were especially memorable. The band also performed a few tracks from their unreleased new record. These tunes showed off the Chicago blues end of the band’s musical spectrum, highlighting virtuosic guitar solos against slow jams. By the time I got inside, openers Company of Thieves were preparing to hit the stage. I hadn’t heard a thing about the Chicago quintet, so I honestly had no idea what to expect. Judging by the number of people sitting in the back of the room, I wasn’t the only one, but there were at least a handful of people who were visibly psyched when the band started playing. Within about a minute, I could understand why. The Thieves play a smoky, jam-y, bluesy form of indie-rock, and they attack it head-on, with both hands — the band’s a kissing cousin to retro-soul purveyors like Adele or Amy Winehouse, but with a much nastier, more ’60s classic-rock edge to it.

While her bandmates were talented — particularly fiery guitarist Marc Walloch and moonlighting ex-Hush Sound bassist Chris Faller — frontwoman Genevieve Schatz was definitely the focus of things. Her infectious, wide-smiling energy balanced out the awesome roar emanating from that dimunitive frame; the woman’s a blues-belter in indie-hippie clothing, make no mistake about it. Schatz’s performance combined the power and raw emotion of Beaumont-bred legend Janis with the head-swaying sweetness and melodic sense of Edie Brickell (the latter of whom, by the way, shouldn’t be judged by that one godawful song from back in the day). And all the while, she came off as absolutely sincere, with a charming, almost shy innocence in-between songs.

As a unit, Company of Thieves have a hell of a talent for great, bombastic mid-song changeups, smoothly derailing the train and barreling off in another direction while barely missing a beat. In the end, I was very impressed, although their 2009 album Ordinary Riches has so far been a bit of a slow-burner — there’s not nearly the fire of the live performance there, possibly because it was recorded without the full band that’s touring now.

The band seemed happily surprised by the crowd’s reaction to the music, especially since this was their first time visiting Houston. It was also apparently only Night #2 of their tour with The Hold Steady, and Schatz seemed excited as hell to be playing with the headliners.

"Company of Thieves, an indie rock band hailing from Chicago, is one of the most unique bands I’ve heard in quite some time. I fell in love with them about a year ago with their debut album Ordinary Riches. So obviously I was thrilled to find out they are set to release their next album, Running From A Gamble, early next year.

The band is currently on tour and my friend got the chance to see them in Denver. They were passing out a free download card with a song off their new album. And he grabbed one for me.
The song is called “Nothing’s in the Flowers.” I was concerned that there was no way their new album could live up to their first. Well, I still don’t think it will, however, “Nothing’s in the Flowers” is still a great track.
It shows definite progression, as a song off of a sophomore album should. While it still features the band’s quirkiness and Genevieve’s fantastic pipes, it has a more serious tone than their usually playful tracks. The bridge feels like it came straight off of Ordinary Riches, however the rest of the song is softer, developing into epicness.

Adam and I are heading up to San Diego to check out the band live on November 13. I am definitely excited to see the new direction the band is taking and perhaps they’ll debut more material live.

"First, a semi-personal story. Earlier this year, my friend Megan and I traveled five hours from St. Louis to Nashville’s adorable little T-shaped venue called 3rd and Lindsley to see three singer-songwriters named Allison Weiss, Bess Rogers, and Jenny Owen Youngs.

Little did we know, the individual-artists-turned-lady-super-group-for-tour was one of three acts playing that evening. As Meg and I awkwardly chatted post-show with Weiss, Rogers, and Youngs, we were stopped mid-fawning as Company of Thieves, out of Chicago, rattled on to the stage. C.O.T. plays energetic live sets that grab you right by the face. Leading lady Genevieve Schatz is charming, commanding, and a hell of a vocalist.

Listening to their notable debut release, Ordinary Riches, is a different experience than seeing the band live. They are loud. They are lyrically clever (their single, “Oscar Wilde,” won the 2007 New York Songwriters Circle contest). They are very arresting."

Summer Darling - the opening band - successfully kept the audience entertained before Ok GO hit the stage. But it was the Chicago based band, Company of thieves, who took my breath away.

Even from when they were just setting up, I was instantly in love with the guitarist - who happened to be right in front of me. It wasn’t just his hipster look, (glasses, a plaid shirt with a light brown jacket, and messy beard and long hair) - it was definitely the guitar itself. I strangely found it very attractive- it has an old wooden look. I loved the guitar the moment I saw it. I took quite a few photos of just that.

Their petite vocalist completely blew my mind. She was a little girl who was wearing a shiny dress on the top of a casual T-shirt. She just looked so innocent and loveable as she was freaking out how many people were there to see their performance.

But it was right when she was testing her microphone which completely changed my impression of her after all: very vigorous and enticing. It was nothing close from what I expected how she sounded like. Thus, my expectation for this band just hit right at the top and they didn't betray me at all.

It must have been from the charismatic character of the singer. I literally couldn't take eyes off from her. She sounded and looked so lively that I just couldn't help thinking that she has such a gift. It is almost like seeing her as an actress on the stage. Her facial expression, gesture, and the voice, all of them together, I felt like she was telling us a story using a means called "Music" Whatever they played, it was like I knew all the songs as I was so into listening to them. Therefore, it almost felt awkward to fell such a familiarity when I first heard their songs. Furthermore, it was the singer's smile that made me even happier to be there. She was truly enjoying playing a show on the stage. I think she was the one who was having funs the most.

In terms of their music wise, some songs were very jazzy songs, while others are very melodic. I was fond of the beats of their songs.

They played one new song (though all of them were new to me as I didn't know them at all) which they just finished recording their second album. This means that their new material should be coming out very soon. It was the third time for them to be in Toronto. I would LOVE to see them again for sure with their new material!

This is what I said to Boris when Company of thieves finished their gig. I was so fulfilled with the performance of Summer Darling and Company of thieves that I actually would have been happy if OK Go did not play their show. This is how much I loved the performance of these opening bands!! I was so content with them! They made my day for sure. But you know what? OK GO of course performed and blew me away.

The IU chapter of the Timmy Foundation has booked three bands to perform a benefit show Thursday for their partnering organization, Pop Wuj, in Guatemala.

Company of Thieves, Busman’s Holiday and Rodeo Ruby Love are the bands set to perform at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater box office or online at www.buskirkchumley.org.

The Timmy Foundation tries to travel every other month to Guatemala and Ecuador to work with local organizations to set up medical programs in rural villages.

“The funds from the show will be used to run a low-cost clinic and pay salaries, provide medication and go towards an endowment fund to promote sustainability within the organization,” said senior Amanda Steinken, who serves as the IU Timmy Foundation Bloomington Fundraising Chairwoman.

Steinken and IU Timmy Foundation President senior Gaby Cheikh began organizing benefit concerts for the Timmy Foundation and its partner organizations three years ago.

Cheikh ran into Company of Thieves’ lead singer, Genevieve Schatz, at a show in Indianapolis and created a partnership with the band. This will be the Company of Thieves’ fourth show for the Timmy Foundation.

Mike: We have not, this will be our first time ever and I’m beyond excited.

Mike: We had a pre-show last night at the Back Porch at the House of Blues, with another band called “This is United States.”

Mike: And it was amazing… sold out, really, really cool show!!
Scott: Awesome! That sounds great! So if you could take one piece of music equipment with you on the road, what would it be?!
Mike: Musical equipment?Scott: What’s like the most essential thing you’ve had to have all the time when you’re touring?

Sunday was a a day of firsts -- the sun was replaced with rain and clouds and I was set to make my first appearance at the Sony Bloggie stage for a hometown performance by Company of Thieves.

The band formed after playing open mics at coffee shops on the north side of Chicago, and any questions about its ability to graduate to an outdoor stage at Lollapalooza were immediately put to rest by lead singer Genevieve Schatz. Schatz pranced around the stage with a girlish enthusiasm, but her voice and lyrics commanded she be taken seriously. Her sunny personality was a bright spot as rain clouds were on their way out of the area, as the group closed with the popular song, "Oscar Wilde."

Festival-goers began the day being unsure they were even going to see the sun, but the rain clouds moved out of the area around 3 p.m. and were replaced with about four hours of nothing but sunny skies and hot temperatures.

Lollapalooza 2010 Day Three Review/Photos: Company of Thieves

It can be pretty tough to decide what to see on any given day of Lollapalooza, but I always make it a point to highlight Chicago-based bands when marking up my schedule. This year, I made sure to check out not only Skybox on Saturday (more on that here), but also Company of Thieves on Sunday.

While I was very familiar with the band from their debut album, Ordinary Riches, and even did a Q&A with guitarist Marc Walloch on Windy City Rock, I had never seen them live before their set at the fest. I was very impressed. Frontwoman Genevieve Schatz was one of the most dynamic, compelling performers I saw all weekend - with one of the best voices - and the band had a bite and an edge that hasn't been as prominent on their recorded material.

Highlights of the set included their most notable song, "Oscar Wilde," as well as material Schatz introduced as being from the band's soon-to-be-released sophomore album. "Queen of Hearts" was an emotionally hard hitting song with an excellent chorus that really showcased Schatz's vocals, while "Gorgeous Grotesque" - an environmentally themed song - engrossed with a dark, slightly menacing vibe. The band had a sizable crowd and did their home city proud.

Our wonderful Mid-West photographer Jen “Coble” Hopper was very excited about reviewing Company of Thieves’ pre-Lollapalooza concert at Chicago’s House of Blues on August 5th. Despite unwarranted interference from the venue’s notoriously aggressive security, Coble managed to get some great shots of the band’s performance and you can read her thoughts about the show below…

Thursday’s Lollapalooza pre-show for Company of Thieves was welcomed by a loud and enthusiastic crowd.

Lead singer Genevieve Schatz brought fantastic energy to the performance. Wailing on the mic as she pounded the tambourine, her big and throaty and still comforting voice paired with dynamic storytelling style made the music come alive. In interviews, Genevieve seems quiet and kind, so it’s a wonderful dichotomy to see her personality unleashed under the stage lights.
The band played old favorites from their first album Ordinary Riches, and we were also treated to a couple of tunes from their upcoming album. The new direction feels similar and yet more honed, as they continue to write songs well suited to Genevieve’s unique voice and maintain their smart and clever lyrics.

The last time I saw Company of Thieves was just last fall when they opened for fellow Chicago natives, Empires. At the time, I was quite impressed – they seemed much more seasoned than an opening band! Still, they continue to improve. They now seem quite solidly together and Genevieve easily makes herself at home on stage.

Company of Thieves music is always upbeat and their live performances are very rewarding – more vivid than the already captivating album versions. The band seemed very humbled to be playing Lollapalooza, and with good reason – their popularity has skyrocketed in the last year, even resulting in an appearance with Daryl Hall on “Live From Daryl’s House”. They’re wearing it all quite well and no doubt can expect continued support from their fans who anxiously await the new album.

While locals Company of Thieves have been a longtime favorite of mine, The Dodos supply a more complex and eclectic sound and would be a shoe-in for any music fan with experimental tastes. However, CoT singer Genevieve Schatz has one of the most charismatic stage presences of any band coming out of our city. Besides, it seems like The Dodos would be much more enjoyable if you are already familiar with their work, while I can't think of a single reason anyone would not completely fall in love with Company of Thieves upon first listen. This one's a toss-up. It's a total win-win. - Stephanie Griffin
